Senior Investigator
Helps conduct our research and contributes to Model Republic
The Midas Project is a watchdog nonprofit that holds frontier AI developers accountable through research and advocacy. We released The OpenAI Files, a comprehensive dossier about OpenAI and their restructuring that received over 100 million views on X. Our work has earned coverage in 20+ outlets, including Time, NBC News, Reuters, and Politico. Our recently launched publication Model Republic has broken multiple original stories, including exposés of an apparent influence campaign against the AI Overwatch Act and the existence of an AI-generated news site funded by an AI industry super PAC.
About the Role
You'll run the investigations driving our work and write them up for Model Republic, our publication covering the AI industry, policy, and the forces shaping the rules of AI. You'll help to shine a light on conflicts of interest, influence campaigns, and the emerging risks we face as the world begins to confront highly powerful AI systems. Then you'll turn that evidence into rigorous, readable stories that journalists, policymakers, and the public can rely on.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct independent investigations into AI companies covering topics including their governance, safety practices, lobbying, and political influence
- Research and write in-depth Model Republic articles, from quick-turn analysis to major investigative pieces
- Synthesize information from diverse sources such as corporate disclosures, legal filings, regulatory documents, campaign finance records, social media, and tips
- Compare companies' published commitments against their actual behavior, including compliance with safety frameworks and laws such as California's AI safety rules
- Offer editing and fact-checking support to investigations from others on the team or freelancers who are writing for Model Republic
